Finjan: Layoffs Could Drive IT People To Become Cyber-Criminals

Security vendor Finjan predicts that the current economic downturn could herald a sharp rise in cybercrime during 2009--driven by the rise in the number of IT people being laid off. According to a report from the company's Malicious Code Research Center (MCRC), more unemployed IT personnel will be tempted to seek "new and easy income by purchasing and using crimeware toolkits that are sold by professional hackers."

Microsoft To Build RSA Technology into Platform to Protect Data

Microsoft announced it will be integrating technology from EMC's security division, RSA, into future products. Microsoft will build the RSA Data Loss Prevention (DLP) classification technology into its platform and future information protection products to enable organizations to define information security polices centrally, automatically identify and classify sensitive data virtually anywhere in the infrastructure, and use a range of controls to protect data at the endpoints, network, and data center. In addition, in the near term RSA's DLP Suite 6.5 will be engineered to integrate with Microsoft Active Directory Rights Management Services (RMS) within Windows Server 2008.

DePaul Replaces Analog Cameras with Axis and Milestone IP-based System

DePaul University is using network cameras from Axis Communications as a security measure on its two main campuses, which are interwoven with surrounding residential and commercial communities in Chicago. Over the course of this past summer, DePaul replaced a legacy system of various analog cameras--each running on coaxial cable and requiring a digital video recorder to record events--with Axis network cameras.

Pacific U Integrates Facebook and Twitter into e2Campus Emergency Notification System

Pacific University of Forest Grove, OR has integrated its Facebook and Twitter accounts into its Omnilert e2Campus emergency notification system. This allows the university to send e2Campus alerts (called Boxer Alerts at Pacific U) automatically and simultaneously to the school's Facebook and Twitter accounts without the need for logging into Facebook and Twitter separately. This also means students who haven't enrolled in the school's official alert system may still get the alerts through the social networking and communication sites.
